How to prepare for your ultrasound

 

Abdomen (aorta, gallbladder, liver, pancreas, spleen) - Nothing by mouth for 8 hours prior to the exam

Scan Time: 30 minute exam

Arterial - No preparation required

Scan Time: 90-120 minute exam

Venous - No preparation required

Scan Time: 30 minute, unilateral; 60 minute, bilateral

Breast - No preparation required

Scan Time: 30 minute, unilateral; 60 minute, bilateral

Carotid - No preparation required

Scan Time: 30 minutes

Eyes - No preparation required

Scan Time: 30 minutes

Renal - Do not void 1-2 hours before exam

Scan Time: 30 minutes

Bladder - Do not void 1-2 hours before exam and drink 12 ounces of water 30 minutes prior

Scan Time: 30 minutes

1st Trimester Fetal Transabdominal - Full bladder, drink 32-40 ounces of water (finish drinking by 1 hour prior to exam) 

Scan Time: 30 minutes

1st Trimester Fetal Transvaginal - No preparation required

Scan Time: 30 minutes

2nd/3rd Trimester - Do not void 1 hour prior

Scan Time: 30-60 minutes depending on what is ordered by physician

Pelvic Transabdominal - Full bladder, drink 32-40 ounces of water (finish drinking by 1 hour prior to exam)

Scan Time: 30 minutes

Pelvic Transvaginal - No preparation required

Scan Time: 30 minutes

Testicles - No preparation required

Scan Time: 30 minutes

Thyroid - No preparation required

Scan Time: 30 minutes

Ultrasound guided biopsies - Eat a light breakfast

Scan Time: 60-90 minutes
