Cover the Uninsured Week
Cover the Uninsured Week is March 14 - 20, 2010.
An estimated forty-six million Americans are uninsured. Nine million of them are children. More than eight out of 10 are in working families. The number of uninsured Americans continues to rise with the current economic crisis. They are our friends, neighbors and colleagues – forced to gamble every day that they won’t get sick or injured. J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital is joining the national campaign to highlight the fact that too many Americans are living without health insurance.
Despite the large number of uninsured Americans, there are resources available to Pennsylvanians to help fill in the gaps:
• CHIP: Children up to age 19 can receive free or low cost comprehensive medical coverage through the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) if they are not eligible for Medical Assistance. Premiums and co-pays are dependent on the household’s yearly income. CHIP covers preventive medical care (immunizations and check-ups); prescription drugs; dental, vision and hearing services; emergency medical care; mental health benefits (including partial hospitalization); substance abuse treatment; hospitalization up to 90 days per year; and more. Children with pre-existing conditions are not excluded. There is no waiting list for the program. For more information, call 1-800-986-KIDS or visit www.chipcoverspakids.com.
• adultBasic: Adults ages 18-64 that have been without health insurance for at least 90 days and meet income guidelines may qualify for coverage through the adultBasic program. The adultBasic program covers preventive care, emergency care, hospital stays, inpatient/outpatient services, and more. There is a waiting list for this program. However, individuals can purchase adultBasic at full cost while remaining on the waiting list for the reduced cost program. For more information, call 1-800-GO-BASIC.
Additional programs are available for those needing short-term or discounted coverage based on income. For applications and assistance, contact J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital’s Patient Financial Counselor at (814) 643-8844.
