J.C. Blair Initiates Pandemic Influenza Plan
Since Monday, April 27, headlines have been filled with news about the H1N1 (swine) flu, as each day more cases are identified throughout the world. Officials have indicated that a pandemic is inevitable. Although there are no confirmed cases of the H1N1 (swine) flu in Pennsylvania, J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital has initiated the Hospitalís pandemic influenza plan for the safety of its patients, staff, volunteers and visitors.
The Hospital is asking that anyone entering the hospital who:
- Has symptoms of cough, fever, stuffy/runny nose, and/or sore throat AND
- Has had close contact with a person who has confirmed swine flu OR
- Traveled to a community in the United States or internationally where there are one or more confirmed swine flu cases OR
- Lives in a community where there are one or more confirmed swine flu cases
to please identify themselves to the Registration or ER clerk as being possibly exposed to H1N1 flu, to wear a surgical mask, and stay six feet from others in the waiting areas
In addition, The Hospital is advising anyone entering and exiting the hospital to clean their hands using the alcohol gel dispensers at each entrance.
The Hospital team is consulting with local, state and national experts in daily conference calls and will update their plan accordingly. The team encourages residents to stay informed of the latest recommendations by consulting the Centers for Disease Control at www.cdc.gov/swineflu and PA Department of Health at www.health. state.pa.us or call 1-877-PAHEALTH.
ďIt is important that families begin to consider and prepare for the impact a flu pandemic may have on their lives,Ē said Hospital spokesperson Chris Gildea. A pandemic influenza preparation resource guide for individuals and families of Huntingdon County is available at the Hospital and various locations throughout the County.
The guide is a collaborative effort of The Huntingdon County Healthy Communities PartnerSHIP and funded by a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Health. It provides an explanation of pandemic influenza, describes the impact a pandemic influenza will have on our community and recommends ways to minimize its impact. Local resources, as well as web resources, are also included.
The guide also includes a call to action to volunteer with one of the service organizations that will be called upon to help those in need should a pandemic influenza break out. Local EMS services and fire companies as well as regional, state and federal organizations will all need manpower pools to draw from during such an event.
