National Health Care Decision Day on April 16, 2009
J.C. Blair Social Services staff will present free information on advanced healthcare decision making at the annual Senior Expo at the Smithfield Fire Hall on April 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The Senior Expo coincides with National Health Care Decision Day. J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, along with other national, state, and community organizations, are leading a massive effort to highlight the importance of advanced healthcare decision-making – an effort that has culminated in the formal designation on April 16, 2009, as National Healthcare Decision Day (NHDD). As a participating organization, J.C. Blair is providing information and tools for the public to talk about their wishes with family, friends, and healthcare providers. J.C. Blair wants to help individuals execute written advanced directives, which are health care powers of attorney and living wills. Advanced directives provide individuals with the opportunity to document who they would like as an “agent” or decision maker and what type of healthcare interventions they desire. These resources are available at www.nationalhealthcaredecisionsday.org.
“This event on National Healthcare Decision Day will enable people in their community to learn to be in control of their healthcare decisions and make the choice to have their wishes known,” said Deborah Sluder, Social Worker at the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital. “Everyone in our community and beyond our community deserves the opportunity to think about and plan healthcare decisions. When making decisions ahead of time, families and healthcare providers will not have to struggle with making difficult health care decisions in the absence of guidance from the patient. J.C. Blair wants to help families be in control and make informed choices to have their wishes known.”
