J.C. Blair Now Offers Digital Mammograms
Women who undergo routine mammograms at J.C. Blair’s new Women's Imaging Center now have the latest diagnostic technology available to them, digital mammography. The Grand Opening of the new digital mammography suite is Tuesday, January 24 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the J.C. Blair Medical Imaging Department (Radiology) on the ground floor of the Hospital. A ribbon cutting at 5:00 p.m. will be followed by tours, refreshments and door prize drawing. For more information or to RSVP, please call (814) 643-8889.
“We’re very excited to be able to offer the newest technology for breast cancer detection,” said J.C. Blair’s Director of Medical Imaging Larry Garman, R.T.(R), (CT), (ARRT). “Bringing digital to our mammography patients is a dream come true.”
Digital mammography is different from conventional mammography in how the image of the breast is acquired and, more importantly, viewed. The radiologist can magnify the images, increase or decrease the contrast and invert the black and white values while reading the images. These features allow the radiologist to evaluate microcalcifications and focus on areas of concern.
The new Selenia™ Dimensions digital mammography from Hologic™ offers a number of other practical advantages and patient conveniences. Because there is no waiting for film to be developed, it significantly reduces the need for repeat exams due to under or over exposure. Digital images are easily stored and transferred electronically, eliminating the dependency on one set of original films, which can be misfiled or lost in transit. In addition to offering superior mammography technology, the new system offers a more comfortable mammogram with breast plates angled to more naturally fit the contour of the breast.
By offering women digital and more comfortable mammograms, the Center hopes to increase the number of area women who follow recommendations for regular screenings – annual screening mammogram for all women 40 years of age and older.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her life. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 97%.
