J.C. Blair Now Providing the Latest in Bone Health Assessment

The Women's Imaging Center at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce new state-of-the-art bone density testing services available to men and women with the addition of the Discovery™ QDR bone densitometry DEXA system from Hologic®. DEXA is a test that measures bone density to help diagnose osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is the thinning and weakening of the bones. Over time, everyone is at risk for developing osteoporosis. Fifty percent of women over the age of 50 will break a bone. Twenty five percent of men over the age of 50 will break a bone. Risk factors for osteoporosis include: age, sedentary habits, excess alcohol use, smoking, family history, low body weight, some medications and medical conditions.

The healthcare costs associated with osteoporosis are staggering, and the effect on a patient's quality of life can be devastating. Only about 10% of women over the age of 65 have normal bone mass. Seventy-seven percent of American women with osteoporosis are undiagnosed (and therefore untreated). Fortunately, osteoporosis is detectable and treatable and testing is safe and non-invasive.

"By screening for osteoporosis, we can identify weakened bones, so you can take precautions and get treatment if needed to help prevent factures that would interfere with your active lifestyle," says J.C. Blair Chief Radiologist Maria Pettinger, M.D.

The Discovery DEXA system offers two powerful screening tests – vertebral fracture assessment (FRAX) to detect vertebral fractures early and bone density measurement (DEXA) to help save patients from debilitating and life-threatening spine and hip fracture. The system offers superior visualization, unparalleled speed and precision, and uses the most leading-edge technology available today.

The Women's Imaging Center at J.C. Blair is dedicated to delivering the highest quality screening and diagnostic imaging services to physicians and their patients. The Center is a part of the J.C. Blair Radiology Department which provides a comprehensive scope of services including hybrid positron emission testing computed tomography (PET/CT), CT scanning, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, mammography, nuclear medicine, general radiology and x-ray, and bone densitometry.

"Each and every patient receives personalized care designed to meet his or her individual needs. Our staff is committed to providing exceptional care for the residents of our community," says J.C. Blair Radiology Director Larry Garman, Jr., R.T.(R), (CT), (ARRT).
