J.C. Blair Celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month

J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital’s Mammography Department is celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a free gift lunch tote filled with breast health information, funded by the Susan G. Komen Foundation, to all women who get their mammogram at J.C. Blair during the month of October. Women will also be able to enjoy pink floral arrangements in the mammography unit donated by Precious Petals from Orbisonia, Four Seasons, Weaver the Florist and Clapper’s Flowers, all from Huntingdon.

J.C. Blair is also raffling off a queen size “Colors of Cancer Quilt” crafted by the Red Bud Quilt Guild. Tickets are one ticket for $1 or six tickets for $5. The quilt is on display at the Volunteer Information Desk at the Hospital. The winner will be drawn on Saturday, October 15, 2011, at the Scott Grugan Memorial 5K Trail Run/Walk at Flagpole Hill. Before you put off your yearly appointment with your doctor, the J.C. Blair Mammography Department asks you to consider this: if that visit includes appropriate early detection tests for cancer such as a mammogram and breast exam, it could help save your life.

Yearly mammograms and breast exams for women age 40 and older can find breast cancer early, when the disease is most treatable.

The five-year survival rate for breast cancer that has not spread to lymph nodes or other locations outside the breast is 98 percent. However, if the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes, the rate drops to 84 percent. And if the cancer has spread to distant organs, the rate drops to 23 percent. That means taking the time to get screened for breast cancer can make a dramatic difference in a woman’s chances of surviving this disease.

So don’t wait – ask your doctor about the screening tests that are right for you, and remind the women you care about to get a mammogram and breast exam every year once they turn 40.

Testing for breast cancer is not perfect. Mammograms and breast exams can miss some breast cancers, so be sure to report any changes in the way your breasts look and feel to a doctor right away.

You can help create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays. For more information on how you can stay well, call your American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org/breastcancer.
