First Patient Admitted to J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital 100 Years Ago
One hundred years ago, on September 4, 1911, Mapleton Depot teacher Ira Fisher was admitted to J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon as its first patient. One hundred years and hundreds of thousands of patients later, the hospital continues to play a vital role in the lives of people in the communities surrounding Huntingdon. The Hospital will celebrate this milestone on Sunday with refreshments in the Main Lobby of the Hospital starting at noon on Sunday and with a special thank you to all patients who register for hospital services during this anniversary week.
This event is one of several anniversary events that have been planned by the Hospital to commemorate its centennial:
The celebration started on Memorial Day 2010 with the Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Laying of the Hospitalís Cornerstone and the raising of the centennial flag at the hospital.
A book documenting the 100 year history of the hospital, authored by local historians Nancy Swigart Shedd and Alberta Haught Goshorn, and featuring over 200 vintage photographs, was published.
The planting and dedication of trees on the Hospitalís campus.
Presentations were made throughout the year with various civic groups.
A birthday party was celebrated with fairgoers at this yearís Huntingdon County Fair, with birthday cake and ice cream served by Huntingdon Countyís dairy princess.
A dedication of commissioned art by local artist Don Dietz depicting the Hospitalís history will be held on Wednesday, September 7, from 5 to7 p.m. with refreshments and tours of the Hospitalís new Cardiac Rehabilitation and Bone Density Programs to follow.
An Evening of Promise Gala and Recognition Program will be celebrated on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Lake Raystown Resort.
