New Lactation Services Offered to Breastfeeding Mothers at J.C. Blair
August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month. It is widely regarded that breast milk is best for babies. However, new mothers often struggle with starting and continuing breastfeeding.
Mothers interested in breastfeeding their newborns can now take advantage of new lactation services in the maternity department J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital. Thanks to a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, J.C. Blair is partnering with Broad Top Area Medical Center WIC (Women Infants and Children) to provide expanded breastfeeding support pre- and post-delivery for all new mothers at J.C. Blair, regardless of their income.
As part of these expanded lactation services, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) Stephanie Weaver, BS, IBCLC, RLC, will be teaching an expanded breastfeeding course to expectant mothers as part of J.C. Blair’s prenatal classes. In the course, Weaver will address the differences between breast milk and formula, what to expect the first few days after delivery, and how to know if baby is getting enough milk. She will also demonstrate proper positioning and latch techniques with the use of dolls. All expectant mothers will be given breastfeeding educational materials and Weaver’s contact information if questions arise after delivery. The next scheduled prenatal class is
August 30, 2011.
“I’m really excited to be able to offer this new service to the maternity patients at J.C. Blair,” said Weaver. “As a mom to two boys, I’ve seen the rewards of giving my children this healthy start to life. I’m eager to show other woman how positive breastfeeding can be for both them and their families.”
Once a breastfeeding mother delivers her baby at J.C. Blair, Weaver will make up to two visits to the new mother and newborn while in the hospital to offer breastfeeding support and address any specific questions. After discharge, Weaver will follow up with the new mother by phone to see how breastfeeding is progressing. She is also available to make a home visit to offer additional help and guidance if needed.
“Our maternity nurses have always been supportive of the breastfeeding mother,” said J.C. Blair maternity nurse manager Rita Notestine, RNC, BSN. “However, it’s wonderful to have Stephanie, as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, available as to be an additional and specialized resource to our patients. Breastfeeding services are often very expensive, but we are happy to be able to offer these services free of charge to our patients.”
