Over 200 participate in Dr. David Miller Memorial Event

Over 200 people came out on Memorial Day, May 31, 2010, to participate in the 2nd Annual Dr. David Miller Memorial 5K Run, 1 Mile Walk/Run and Kids Fun Run on J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital Hill.

Awards were presented to the top three overall male and female 5K runners and runners of eight different age groups. Overall female finishers were: first place: Amy Prokop; second place: Ellice Smith; and third place: Angel Burd. Overall male finishers were: first place: Gary Ishler; second place: Nick Miller; and third place: Glenn Katrancha. First place finishers received gold medals with Dr. Miller’s picture; second place received silver medals with Dr. Miller’s picture; and third place received bronze medals with Dr. Miller’s picture. All 5K winners received a J.C. Blair 100th Anniversary pin. One hundred and thirteen runners registered for the 5K race.

Age group winners include: Female Under 12 – first place: Katherine Thurston-Griswold, second place: Brooke Boonie; Male Under 12 – first place: Taylor Mitchell; Female 12-14 – first place: Ellie Keller, second place: Lauren Shugarts; Male 12-14 – first place: Devon Green, second place: William Thurston-Griswold; Female 15-19 – first place: Caitlyn Crisp, second place: Corie Crisp; Male 15-19 – no participants; Female 20-29 – first place: Kim Wagner, second place: Claudia McDowell, third place: Dana Miller; Male 20-29 – first place: Kyle Thompson, second place: Stefan Bibb; Female 30-39 – first place: Liz Katrancha, second place: Kristi Sowash, third place: Dawn Lynn; Male 30-39 – first place: Thomas Ritchey, second place: Brock Eppley, third place: Lewis Boone; Female 40-49 – first place: Christine Borst, second place: Tina Johnston, third place: Sherry Perow; Male 40-49 – first place: Matthew Guisler, second place: David Borst, third place: Gerald Kruse; Female 50-59 – first place: Susan Croyle, second place: Frances Vaughn; Male 50-59 – first place: Henry Thurston-Griswold, second place: David Sowell, third place: Mike Miller; Female 60 & Over - no participants; Male 60 & Over – first place: Bruce Pergament, second place: Douglas Bradley.

The 1 Mile Walk/Run participants received a Dr. David Miller Memorial Walk/Run Ribbon and the Kids Fun Run participants received a patriotic wristband. Members of the Miller family presented the awards. Eighty-eight participants registered for the Walk/Run and 20 children registered for the Kids Fun Run.

Early estimates indicate that the event raised over $4,000 to benefit the Dr. David Miller Memorial Fund at the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital Foundation. The Miller Family hopes to use the money to support the planned Emergency Department renovations at J.C. Blair.

The core planning committee chaired by J.C. Blair Marketing and Community Relations Director Chris Gildea and J.C. Blair Breast Health Coordinator Kayla Thompson included Connie Mateer, Marsha Hartman, Cindy Wetzel, Stacey Freitag and Nancy Miller.

“We are inspired by the Miller family and the support of the community to organize this event,” said Gildea and Thompson. “It’s so rewarding to see families participating in this community-wide fitness event.”
