The goal of the Department of Physical Therapy at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital is to provide high quality, comprehensive rehabilitation to individuals with any of a wide variety of medical and/or physical disabilities. We strive to help our patients reach their greatest potential for recovery as they "Climb the Steps Toward Rehabilitation". We express our dedication to meeting this goal through our highly trained, sensitive staff and well-equipped department.
The staff of the Department of Rehabilitative Services is comprised of hard-working caring professionals who provide many services necessary to the rehabilitation of patients they not only utilize modern technologies, but also offer personal care by teaching, motivating, and coaching patients. A supportive smile or an encouraging "You can do it!" has led many patients to feel that the staff is the special support which provides the motivation to take that first step toward rehabilitation.
The preliminary step is made by a licensed physician, or podiatrist (for foot-related problems) who refers a patient to the Department. Continuous consultation and contact is kept between the Department staff and the patient's physician in order to coordinate care and establish treatment objectives which are realistic and consistent with the patients needs. Initial test and evaluations provide information to determine the first step.
Most often the first step is with physical therapy, which continues to be the backbone of rehabilitation. Licensed physical therapists evaluate patients, develop treatment plans, and provide and direct treatment programs for the care of patients of all ages who may be disabled by illness, injury, or developmental handicaps. Physical therapy treatments received by the patient include exercise for increasing strength, endurance, coordination, and range of motion; the use of heat, cold, and electricity to relieve pain and stimulate motor activity; and instruction in activities of daily living and the use of assistance devices.
