Benefits of Cardiac Rehabilitation
Almost everyone with heart disease can benefit from some type of cardiac rehab.
No one is too old or too young. Women benefit from cardiac rehab as much as
men. Cardiac Rehab is a safe and effective way to help you:
- improve physical strength,
stamina, and flexibility
- improve you heart's
efficiency to do work
- decrease blood pressure
- help with weight control
efforts
- offer support for lifestyle
changes
The program includes three hour-long sessions per week for up to twelve weeks.
The first several weeks of the program focus on education with some low-level
exercising.
The emphasis for the remaining weeks is on an individualize program of
exercise training, geared to the patient's specific needs. This training
program is based on the patient's stress test performance. All sessions are
carefully monitored by specially trained nurses and include activities
performed on a variety of exercise equipment.
Organized lifestyle modification and education programs continue throughout
the twelve weeks. It is important to know that cardiac rehab is safe. The
cardiac rehab team at J. C. Blair is trained to handle emergencies. For your
safety, you may be connected to an EKG transmitter while you exercise.
To be Involved in Cardiac Rehabilitation
You need your doctor's approval to get started in cardiac rehab. Tell your
doctor or nurse that you're interested in cardiac rehab and ask which rehab
services or plans are best for you.
Many health insurance programs cover all or a portion of cardiac
rehabilitation. Pre-authorization for coverage is available with your
